4.4 Themes

4.4.1 Introduction

Themes allow users to "skin" their devices. When users download resources such as themes, wallpapers, ringtones, fonts, etc., they can personalize the appearance of the MIUI system and applications. To respect users' privacy, themes only collect necessary data when running.

Note:

  1. GAID stands for Google Advertising ID. GAID is a unique, user-resettable ID for advertising. Data linked with GAID is classified as Identified. For more information about GAID, go to Google Advertising ID page

  2. Personalization means that the data is collected and used to change the selection or presentation of content for different users.

  3. Analytics means that data is collected and used to analyze and improve the existing functional capabilities, and to provide insights for adding new capabilities based on the results of the analysis.

  4. Advertising means that the data is collected and used to provide an advertising service to you, including requesting advertisements, and evaluating the outcome of promotions.

4.4.3 Data Collection and Usage

1) Basic Functions

Themes provide you with various resources to customize your system interfaces, such as themes, wallpapers, ringtones, and fonts. You can browse, search, download, and apply these resources through the Themes feature. Additionally, Themes uses your phone's locale and region settings to display relevant resources and when you download a resource, Themes will collect both your Mi Account ID and the unique ID of the downloaded item.

2) Paid Services

You can purchase paid themes or paid font resources. To use this feature, you need to log in with your Mi Account. We collect the Mi Account ID and resource ID for the items you purchased.

3) Adding to Favorites

To create a list of preferred resources, you can add them to your Favorites list. However, you must first log in with your Mi Account to use this feature, and we will collect both your Mi Account ID and the resource ID for that specific item.

4) Personalized Recommendations for Resources

To help you discover more excellent resources, such as wallpapers and themes, Themes presents you with personalized recommendations for resources you may be interested in on the home page, resource detail page, and wallpaper module page.

We use the data collected in Themes, including your download history, favourites list, app interaction data, and search history to provide personalized recommendations.

5) Analytics

Analytical data assists in identifying app issues and enhancing the user experience. Data collection for analysis purposes is controlled by our MIUI User Experience Program. For details, go to Settings > Password and Security > Privacy > Enroll in User Experience Program.

Themes collect certain product interaction data, such as the number of clicks on each module and page exposure, for analysis and improvement purposes. The data collected for this purpose is used in aggregated form and cannot be associated with a specific user.

Themes also collect crash data for troubleshooting and improvement.

6) Advertising

Themes provide you with personalized advertisements. For detailed information regarding ads in MIUI, please refer to 4.13 Advertisement.

4.4.4 Manage Your Privacy

1) Access, Download or Delete User Data in Themes

ou can request to access, download, or delete data in Themes by accessing the Privacy Center in Mi Account or by contacting us via Xiaomi Privacy Support.

2) Withdraw Your Consent

You can withdraw your consent in the Themes settings. Go to Themes > Settings, and click the "Withdrawal of consent" option.

Themes will cease to collect data and remove any previously stored data from both local and cloud storage once the user revokes their consent.

3) Manage Personalized Recommendations

The first time you access the Wallpapers homepage, a pop-up will appear containing the app's terms and conditions, privacy policy, and a checkbox for managing personalized recommendations. If you wish to opt out of receiving any personalized recommendations, you can uncheck the box.

To modify your personalized recommendation settings later on, go to Themes > Settings, and toggle the "Personalized Recommendations" option.

4) Manage Ads

You can decide whether to display advertisements in Themes, go to Themes > Settings, and adjust the Show Ads option to your preference.

5) Manage Data Collection for Analysis Purposes

On the Themes platform, you can control data collection for analysis purposes, including the option to allow or stop such collection. Go to Settings > Password & Security > Privacy > User Experience Program, and you can adjust the "Enroll in User Experience Program" option.

4.4.5 Conclusion

Privacy and security protections are the primary goals of product design at Xiaomi. The following privacy principles are deeply integrated into the Themes app:

  • Provide control over user consent, personalization, and ads.

  • Minimize the amount of data collected by Themes.

  • Use data to drive the user experience.
